Grandparents

Growing up, I was always excessively fond of my grandparents, which I now see as being a function of not living near them. Since we only saw each other a couple times a year, they naturally loomed larger in my esteem. We now live within a couple miles of my grandparents, and seeing them has become commonplace.

There's an old saying for this phenomenon: absence makes the heart grow fonder. The 48 Laws of Power puts it another way: 'Use absence to increase respect and honor.'
